01 December 2007
As australianas eu considero colegas:)
Flat friendship***I'm just saying on this post how the definition of friendship can be different for australians and brazilians. I figured out that what australians call friends; we, brazilians, call colleague. A lot of brazilians, who wants to come to live in australia, write e-mails to me and the most commom question is "how is the australian people as a friend"?....I just can say what I experience about and I do find them friendly, individualist and bloody superficial people.
Few months ago I went to visit a couple friends of Pat and I was very surprised to see a photo of Pat and me sticked on their fridge door. I was surprised because I saw them maybe twice before this day, even that they call each other "friend" I find kind of weird that since I'm here in australia I never saw Pat calling them or them calling him; they get together maybe 3 times a year...It may be normal for them but I don't get that pic on the fridge. This photo is about Pat and me in america, he've send it to them when we're still leaving there.
The other odd thing happened this week, There is a girl who I met when I first arrived here and the last time I saw her was jan/2007 she had sent a message to my cell phone this past week saying "Polly, I'm going overseas for 3 months and because I won't have time to give you a hug I want to say good bye and wish you a merry christmas", how weird is that?? from january I don't hear from her..if she was gone and come back from overseas I wouldn't not even miss her. How could I? Well...I've tried to get closer to Pat's friend's wives and girlfriends I won't work hard for friendships, I'm not desperate for it, I beleive the best ones come naturally. I understand that its a cultural matter, in Brazil is very easy to make friends and get closer, I never had to work hard on it...so far, my friends here are the brazilians and the australians are just colleagues:)

É polly a coisa ta preta a coisa ta feia. Ai larguei tudo e me isolei. Você põe a boca e elas dissolvem.
Hahahaha
Beijos
Oi Polly,
tudo bem querida ?
Bjusss linda.
polly,
making friends is not easy. you really have to work at it. first off you need to identify someone you like at first meeting. someone with nice smile/nice way about them. someone who has an interest in you.that's the key. think of how you developed friendship w/ non brazilian like jana. use that as your model for the future.the girl who called to say she was leaving for 3 months . maybe she was thinking of you and would like to be your friend. maybe she is shy. explore that when she returns. send her an e-mail and tell her to get in touch when she returns. that's a nice first step.leave no future friendship unturned.had a blast w/dania yesterday.she sends her love and best wishes. robert
Oi, Poly!
bjs!
Robert...Sorry but I can't agree on you, where I came from is very easy to make friends and I never had to work hard on it. The only thing I had to do is BE MYSELF. This girl who sent me the message isn't a shy person at all, beleive me. I've tried few times to catch up but she always cancel the things and say that she is busy. So...last time that she cancelled our plan I told her that I wasn't going to call her anymore and our friendship would be up to her and we never more saw each other again and now she sent me this message.
My friendship with Jana grew very naturally...I never felt like I was forcing myself to make the friendship to grow...there is no point for that. Yes, Dania told me that she saw you:)
Thanks for the comment anyway and for the good intention on your advice:)

dear pollyana,
yes but you are not in brazil anymore. you are also not single
anymore. as you grow older it is harder to make lasting friendships. i did not imply that you had to force yourself on others because that usually does not work. friendships do come naturally sort of.once you have trust and confidence of someone else you become friends but it has to be nurtured along the way. i remember how our friendship evolved. i was never sure it would get to this wonderful point but i felt i had to keep reinforcing my desire for it because of our age difference.i believed in you and what you fought for. friends should be for life but it does not always work out that way. you constantly have to stay in touch to make it a lasting relationship.in other words true friends keep it alive somehow and know how to say you are sorry when you slip up sometimes.i think the brazilian people are warm and very friendly. but most of the world is not like that as you have found out. i just came from post office and my unconventional way of staying in touch is on it's way.i'm glad you heard from dania as well. i wrote to you about our day together.i have a new cough.
have a terrific week and weekend. probably won't get to e-mail until next week. be well.

Dear dear robert...You're right, I'm not in Brazil that's exactly what I'm talking here, about the culture...how different it is and I know I have to adjust myself in to it once I choose to live here, but what I'm saying is that is very unconfortable because in some how I feel that they are ignoring me and next day I see my picture on they fridge, I just don't get it. You're american, so...I'm sure you'll understand better the australian behaviour because you guys are similar:) In America (and here) if you're too friendly people see you as a weird person, something must be wrong with you.
Ggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!haahah....
bjocas
dear polly,
good we agree somewhat on this issue. i would always want you to be yourself which is very a outstanding person. but if you do not try to maintain a friendship it will die.is a friend you have not seen or heard from in 3 years still a good friend?i felt i put a great deal of effort into becoming your friend because i wanted it. and you responded back.
we continue to be that way because our friendship is solid. all i am saying is that both of us did work
at starting and growing it to where it is today.so it takes ongoing maintenance to keep it alive.yes i'm sure it is different in brazil but most of the world is
not as friendship oriented. we are suspicious of people who are overly friendly.it's the nature of the species i guess.i am very proud of our friendship and it has beeen most fulfilling and rewarding time in my life.thank you polly.i wish i could read portuguese.i wish i could explain why that girl did not keep in touch with you. only she can give you a reason. i would withhold judgment for awhile longer until she returns. maybe her life got complicated and too busy. just keep connecting as best you can in your new environment. i know you have a great personality and spirit so good luck.like i said before i wish i knew in first grade. life brings many many changes. rpk
Bom.. estou me adaptando a isso! =)
Estou sem tempo! huauhahu
WOW! what an interesting discussion, I am going to write in English because I want to tell Robert I understand and agree a lot with him.
I am 43 yeards old and it was very difficult to make friends in Brazil, before I left to leave in the USA, when I was already 38, 29.
Life changes so much wehn we grow older. I got married when I was 20. Before that I had a huge group of friens, then I got pregnant, my work took me to several contries, but also took me away form a regular social life in Brazil... so, after some years that initial "teen" feeling of having a group just faded out.
I could write a LOT about this here, maybe I am going to make a post about in my blog (unfortunatelly in Portuguese, Robert), because I think in some extent this amazing "brazilian warmth and cordiality" is a myth/.
Actually, I don't get involved with many brazilians in activities, but the people who do always teel me about so much gossip and fights.. I think this "intimacy" it is a bit too much, many times and it is easy for people to go much beyond the limits.
And, Polly, sorry, but I don't think americans think we are weird when we are "too friendly people".
The same way I know great brazilian people here in DC< I know great americans too. Very sweet and friendly, they just feel uncomfortable when we cross the boundaries, honestly, I would too.
Anyway, the main thing I wanted to say is that not making friends easy it is not something mainly from northern people, I think it has much more to do with age and moments of our lives.
I have lots of friends in Brazil and even when I was living there we barely met, we had children, work, husbands (or wives) and it gets hard to keep up with a social life after som years.
Sorry, I wrote too much, Polly! have a great week!
ps.: Always when I come here I remember the great time I had in Melbourne! I miss the city and feel SO sorry we didn't have opportunity to meet!
Denise...Thanks for your comment:) and I definitively agree on you about the gossip and fights because of too much intimacy between the brazilians, it is something about our culture and I don't appreciate it at all.
When I first arrived here I was looking for friends because I NEED that; for me, family, husband and friends envolve different kinf of love and one doesn't replace other. I've always tried to manage my life in some how that I could have all of them, and most of time I've got it, nicely with limits and intensity.
I also think that I'm a very seletive person, not everyone I'll be calling friend, but whoever I call friend I take care of, I give attention, time, love. In the other hand I'm very clear if you're someone who I don't have much in commom or I don't feel like seeing you or I'm a soooo busy person that I can't hang out together so...I'never will stick your photo on my fridge or send messages saying good bye as we don't see each other for so long...I find it fake, superficial and sooooo unecessary.
I've read in one of your post something you said about yourself: "When I do somenthing I do very well done" and I'm like that too...
The main point of this post is: I don't get the behaviour of them...it seems sooo "plastic" to me, sooo unatural, so odd. let's say that they are really busy people, they are in to a life moment that nobody can fits in, all right, all right...why do they have to act like we are good friends???? this is the point!
I'm not saying that they are bad people, they just act funny, not reciprocal. And it is hard to me to cope with things that I don't feel any consistency, I prefer to use my energy for other people, other things (have the things well done)...I confess that I don't even feel like answering this kind of messages, I just do reply because of Pat, to be polite with his friends (I've being plastic too).
Actually...I should change the title of this pos for "the plastic flowers will never die" rs..rs....
I was very sorry not getting chance to see you when you're here in melbourne:( I hope you come back one day or if I go to DC I will see you:)

"colega"..rsrsrs
Assisti a um filme ontem "Oceans Thirteen" e achei interessante a forma como o personagem interpretado por Matt Daemon se despede dos outros personagens interpretados por Brad Pitt e George Cloneey "See you When I See You" É bem por ai.... Bjs...
What a discussion Polly! I don't know that I have any insight into this really. I just know you are a very good friend. I think you expect a lot of your friends because you put so much of yourself into those friendships. And by establishing friendships that way you create strong bonds, the downside of this is that not everyone will put that much effort into a friendship and therefor may not be "your type of friend." I guess what I'm saying is that by the nature of your relationships you are selective - in the sense that you need friends who value the friendship on the same high level as yourself. I'm glad I'm your friend. AND I know you will continue to find those select friendships in life...and those will be more valuable than 1,000 colleagues.
Pagoda...You got it!!!!!!!!!!!!! when you said "you need friends who value the friendship on the same high level as yourself" That's exactly how I feel and I'm not going to put any energy for colleagues because I am the one who doesn't have time for superficial relationships, that's how I am, and that's why is soooo unconfortable and hard for me to adjust here. But I'll do my best when I see the superficial ones and for sure I'll have fun but I won't send them messages or have they pics on my fridge (I actually have your post cards):) I'm so proud, grateful and glad to be your friend too...
Roberto...é bem assim mesmo See ya!
Polly,
Adorei o blog, estou linkando no A Janela Laranja.
Abs!
Hi Polly!
Aaaaahhhhhhhh! What else to say? ;)
Only that I completely understand you. No fake friendships! :)
Your friend forever!!!!

Polly, chegou o meu presente do Amigo Secreto do Sindrome! Adorei, estava querendo justo esse livro...\Grata e muitos beijos pra voce...
\Feliz Natal ai com seus amigos/colegas...
Yes, I understand you, Polly. I guess I am more like a "loner", even if I have such a hectic life in the virtual world :-) but in my real life I love my friends but even when I was in Brazil, I was not seeing them very iften.
I am sure we would be friends if we lived in the same city... and Melbourne... God, is gorgeous!!!
Have a nice weekend!
iften=often
:-)
Polly....
love u
Leo
